Accurate oil palm census data is very useful for oil palm planters for costing, budgeting and forecasting purposes. Traditionally, planters will deploy their workers to tour entire estates to count the trees manually which is time-consuming and inefficient. Faced with manpower constraint, planters frequently chose to cut back on such activities.

AI to the rescue

However in today’s time and age,  there are technological alternatives to manual manpower counting. Computer vision, which is a form of AI technology, allows computers to recognize objects in images. When applied onto high resolution drone maps of oil palm estates, individual palm trees could be identified and counted accordingly to give you an accurate tree count of your estate.

Making AI open to all

To make this technology accessible and easy to use even for small-holding planters with limited technical resources, we used millions of images of oil palms to train and refine an AI-based tree counting tool and integrated it onto Plantation 4.0.

With the tree counting tool, planters on Plantation 4.0 can get a highly accurate and fully geo-located inventory of all palm trees captured in their drone maps just by clicking on a few buttons. Planters can then review the tree count data in a variety of ways, including on a dashboard for comparison across estates at a glance or on the map itself so planters can see where exactly the trees are and even tag additional information onto individual trees such as its health status.
